The Wound (Inxeba)
In the mountains of the Eastern Cape in South Africa, a boy from the Xhosa community rebels against the circumcision ceremony that signifies the progression to manhood. An elder, Xolani, is sent to assist, but his ulterior motive is to rekindle an affair with fellow male guide Vija, which signals mortal danger for all three men. This powerful film has manifold scars of battles between old and new, urban and rural, gay and straight.
Won Best First Feature at BFI London Film Festival, and the African-American Film Critics Association Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2017. Nominated for Best Feature Film at Berlinale 2017.
