Self-nicknamed teenager ‘Lady Bird’ and her mother Marion are returning home from a visit to a state university. Teary-eyed on finishing an audiobook detailing a very different California pilgrimage, John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath, they appear an image of perfect emotional harmony, but this changes quickly when the contentious topic of college choices arises, an argument that Lady Bird ends by throwing herself out of the moving car.
Nominated for 5 Oscars, 2 BAFTAs, and winner of 2 Golden Globes.
