Belfast

A love letter to the titular city based on director Kenneth Branagh’s upbringing, Belfast brings to the screen the Child’s-eye perspective of growing up in Northern Ireland during one of the most turbulent times in its history, the Troubles. Buddy, aged nine years old is the youngest child of a protestant family living in North Belfast with his parents (Caitríona Balfe and Jamie Dornan) and grandparents (Judi Dench and Ciarán Hinds).

As tensions grows in the community, the family is forced into uncomfortable situations causing difficult decisions to be made.

Winner of an Oscar®

“At times, he borrows the grammar of westerns – the flicks Buddy gazes up at in his local cinema – to show us this tough world through a child’s eyes: a place where heroes strive to keep villains in their place – and get you in for tea.” – Phil de Semlyen, TimeOut
