PAULA REGO: TELLING TALES
SIXTH FORM STUDENTS

It’s impossible not to think highly of Portuguese painter Paula Rego after watching this compelling documentary, which offers a glimpse into an immodestly portrayed and enigmatic artistic world; for starters, Rego is a delight to watch. As she speaks frankly about her childhood, you become aware that she is not just a storyteller on canvas, she is unpretentious, and genuinely funny.
“The best thing about ‘Telling Tales’ is how well it captures this artist’s dynamic, vivacious work. “I could never paint still life,” she says “it just wouldn’t work.” Jenny James, The Independent

OUTREACH PACKAGE 2:
COME AND SEE (IDI I SMOTRI) KEY STAGE 4

Elem Klimov’s powerful, mesmerising and dynamic awardwinning feature has been deservedly hailed as one of the greatestwar films ever produced. Set in Soviet Belarus during the SecondWorldWar, the story follows Florya, a newly enlisted and innocent partisan, as he staggers dazed and petrified through themerciless horror of the struggle against a cruel German aggressor. The film’s title is derived fromthe Book of Revelations and its call forwitnesses to “come and see” the carnage and devastationwrought by the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The imagery created by Klimov is stunning and the battle scenes frighteningly realistic; the director used real ammunition during filming formaximumauthenticity.
The director’s careful attention to style and detailmake it all too believablewhilst leaving the audience stunned and bewildered to the very last.
Winner of the FIPRESCI Prize and Golden Prize at the 1985 MoscowInternational FilmFestival.
