Real Lives in the War Zone

In his 1998 essay, "Is Nothing Sacred? The Ethics of Television", Michael Ignatieff examined the power of television to confront consciences in the West with suffering in the zones of famine and ethnic war. He asked the burning question: Is such power a hopeful example of the internationalisation of conscience, or does it make us voyeurs of the suffering of others, tourists amid their landscapes of anguish?

A distinguished panel that includes a television director, war correspondent, documentary film-maker and film producer will debate the ethics and moral challenges posed by televising life and death in the warzone.

Alexander Pushkin's classic Russian verse novel is brought to the screen courtesy of the Fiennes Family. Ralph wrote, exec-produced, as well as taking on the title role. While sister Martha directed and brother Magnus wrote the music.

Ralph plays Eugeny Onegin, a Russian gentleman who becomes bored with city life in St. Petersburg, and moves to the vast country estate left to him by his late uncle. There the jaded cynic befriends local poet Vladimir [Toby Stephens] and his fiancee Olga, and wins the heart of her little sister Tatyana [Liv Tyler].

Onegin rejects the young woman's love and retreats once again to the city. Years later the two meet again and Onegin realises that he loves Tatyana. In the meantime she has married someone else, and his realisation of love has come all too late.

A highly atmospheric and romantic tragedy. Ralph Fiennes was born to play this part.

The Quiet American - Irish Premiere
Strand Multiplex 7.00pm

This timely film is taken from the great book by Graham Greene, which tells the story of a British opium addict, resentful of American colonialism in southeast Asia in the 1950s, and a ‘quiet american’ who is in fact an undercover agent. Alongside the political element there is a love triangle, between the two male leads and a beautiful Vietnamese woman. Caine and Fraser both deliver brilliant performances.

The Warrior
Strand Multiplex 5.00pm

The Warrior is a gem of a film to reaffirm your faith in cinema if you're feeling a tad jaded after too many blockbusters. The story follows the journey of the warrior as he attempts to discover a new life of peace in the mountains of Northern India, and leave behind his violent past. He is sickened by the brutality of his role as leader of a band of warriors so puts down his sword and vows never to kill again.

However he does not account for the wrath of the Warlord who sends his men to hunt him down, with terrible consequences. This timeless film makes full use of the spectacular Northern Indian desert and mountain regions, and adds extra effect by opting for minimal dialogue and careful pacing.
