Working With Orson Welles
To many film buffs Orson Welles is the
most significant figure in the history of cinema. Welles completed the
direction of only a dozen films during his career, plus an assortment
of full-length movies that were never completed.
Born to wealthy Wisconsin parents, Welles joined Katherine Cornell’s
theatre troupe in 1934. In the same year he had his first brush with moviemaking,
co-directing and appearing in a short entitled The Hearts of Age. Welles
worked in the Federal Theatre, then in the Mercury Theatre, which he founded
with John Houseman, and performed on radio.
In 1938 he made a radio broadcast of H.G. Wells’
The War of the Worlds and, as a result, a large section of the American
public believed the fake news reports of a Martian invasion, causing widespread
panic. Following this sensational broadcast Welles became famous.

Hollywood discovered the ‘Wonder Boy’
and in 1939 RKO signed him to a contract unprecedented in the annals of
film history: 25% of the profit and absolute creative liberty. It took
two years for Citizen Kane to see the light of day and the rest, as they
say, is history with this masterpiece continually toping the endless lists
of the best movies ever made.
The Foyle Film Festival is delighted this year to be able to offer the
audience a unique and exciting opportunity to see The Unseen Orson Welles,
a collection of shorts and features. Also included in this collection
of rare film and archive footage is the documentary Working With Orson
Welles, which provides a fascinating insight into the working methods
of the legendary genius.

Based on the festival theme of Reel Lives, this
in-depth film production course will explore the basics of how a film
treatment and practical shooting script lead to the actual shooting and
completion of a short story film.
This particular course is not intended to dwell upon the technical side
of filmmaking, but will concentrate upon the creative and acting aspects
of a short film production. As always, the course will have an end product
- the short film itself.
Previous acting experience is not strictly necessary but would be helpful;
what is strictly necessary is enthusiasm and a willingness to participate
actively in the course.
Age of Participants:18 years & over.

This joyful film is the story of an arranged
marriage in India and the craziness of the preparations leading up to
it. There’s a stressed father, a bride-to-be with a secret, a smitten
event planner and a large family from all over the world reuniting for
the big event. The relationships between them all are dealt with in a
light but touching way. This is a refreshing film full of colours and
