Irish Cinema And The Boundaries Of The Sane

Ruth Barton and Harvey O'Brien from University College Dublin School of Film Studies consider how the subject of insanity has been represented in Irish documentary and the figure of the madman has lurked around the edges of Irish cinema for many years.

This illustrated talk will explore the history of many images and question their reappearance in recent Irish films. Though no-one disputes that the representation of insane or divergent states of mind in fiction is always a metaphor for something else, less considered is the fact that in Irish documentaries, the process is much the same.

However, the meaning may be very different in non-fiction. Admission free

Tosca - N. Irish Premiere
Strand Multiplex 2.00pm

This is an astounding film version of the stage show Tosca, with truly magnificent performances from the three leads. Jacquot has used clever ideas to add to the magic of the film.

For example black and white video of the taping is occasionally intercut with the full colour performance. Instead of filming the opera realistically the scenes are made theatrical and larger than life by using impressionistic backgrounds.

This wonderful film will make you want to go straight out and hear the opera again.

Crazy White Foreigner
Nerve Centre 5.30pm

Craig Wilson looks like your average international corporate attorney who happens to live and work abroad in Bangkok, Thailand.

But Craig is no ordinary person at 45 years old, he is an avid amateur boxer who steps into the ring at any opportunity and usually does so against opponents half his age. He continually surprises spectators, not only for being a "farang" or "whiteforeigner", but also for his age. Craig has been dubbed "farang ba"(which means "crazy white foreigner" in Thai). His passion for the sport of amateur boxing had introduced himto a world he would otherwise never have been exposed to.

But for all his success, Craig is extremely humble. He knows he can't take anything for granted. No matter how tough a fight, no matter how strong an opponent, nothing can compare to the bout he has already fought and won: cancer. About 10 years ago, Craig was diagnosed with colon cancer. After undergoing treatment for months he has been clear of cancer and healthy ever since. Boxing literally changed his life, both physically and mentally.

John Sullivan, director and producer says: he is a rare human being, someone who has faced great diversity and come out stronger and more focused than anyone could ever imagine. To me, he symbolizes the enduring human spirit overcoming tremendous adversity. This film is his story, told through his words - one that will certainly touch the hearts and minds of those who see it.

This is a wonderful love story directed by Pedro Almodovar. It depicts the intense love which men have for women, and is made all the more beautiful by the way in which the feelings of the characters are conveyed as so deep and yet so simple.
