'We were cheap labour
once' one Derry woman declares in this documentary and apparently the
women in the Bangladeshi garment industry may no longer be cheap enough.
Race to the Bottom focuses on Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, and Derry,
and charts how the garment industry has virtually left the Developed World
and moved to the poorer countries of the South and is infact constantly
on the move ever downward in search of workers who are forced to work
for less and less and in increasingly dangerous conditions.
Filmed in dramatically diverse locations from the Walls of Derry to the
sweat shops in Bangladesh, this documentary raises many uncomfortable
questions that are simply not being addressed.
Director Ronan Tynan and Producer / Researcher Anne Daly of Esperanza
Productions will attend the screening and conduct a question and answer
session afterwards. Organised in partnership with Cineversity, the Irish
Congress of Trade Unions and the One World Centre.
