BUTTERFLY'S TONGUE
La Lengua de las Mariposas

Film Screening
4pm, Friday 17th @ The Strand Multiplex

An insightful film set in the run-up to the Spanish Civil War, Butterfly's Tongue explores the impact of the War through the eyes of an eight-year-old boy living in Galicia.

Before you go
Find out as much as you can about the Spanish Civil War before you go to see the film. Describe the issues that led the two opposing forces to fight each other, and the events that led to the start of the war.

Where, do you think, does the film's sympathy lie?

Where in Spain is Galicia, and in whose territory (the Republicans or Nationalists) did it find itself in after July 1936??

Write a description in Spanish of Galicia as seen in the film. Describe the scenery, the weather, the buildings, the people.

Create a fictional local Spanish newspaper that covers the Galicia region. Design the front page for an edition dated 22 July 1936. Write the headlines and stories of the day's main news, as it affects the citizens of Galicia. Refer to the characters you have met in the film, and make up your own citizens of Galicia if you need to.

Keep a diary, in Spanish, for the events of the film as seen through the eyes of either: Monco, Don Gregorio, or a soldier in Franco's army.

Split into groups and make up the questions for a class quiz on Butterfly's Tongue.
