LIM Awards
@ the 13th annual Budweiser Foyle Film Festival 2000
The number 13 certainly
didn't turn out to be an unlucky omen for the 13th Budweiser Foyle Film
Festival as this year has proven to be the biggest and best festival
ever. The packed programme included over 150 films and a whole host
of industry guests and workshops to choose from. The audience numbers
for all screenings and events was higher than any previous year.
The festival concluded
on Sunday 19 with the announcement of the winners of the LIM [Light
In Motion] Awards.
The winners of
the LIM Awards in the four competition categories are as follows:
Best International
Short - LOSING TOUCH Sarah Gavron [UK]
An Italian family
cope, in various ways, to their English father leaving. However, it
is the little girl Tessa's unexpected response that ultimately brings
the family together.
Best Irish Short -
BUSKERS Ian Power [Ireland]
The story of a battle
between an Irish boy and a Romanian immigrant to secure a place to beg
at a Dublin train station. Following a comical battle of fists and wits
the boys discover a truly special friendship in the common love of music.
Best Animation
- THE TALE OF THE RAT THAT WROTE Billy O'Brien [UK]
Bafta nominated
this year, The Tale of the Rat that Wrote is a humorous and shocking
film about man's tampering with nature.
Best Feature
- ROOM TO RENT Khaled El Hagar [UK]
Ali is a young Egyptian
screenwriter determined to succeed in London where he has been a student.
However, as things go, he has little money, his student visa is about
to expire, and he has just been thrown out of his lodgings. Ali moves
in with a succession of eccentric characters; Mark, a photographer with
a very individual style; Linda, a young, blonde, very sexy model and
Marilyn Monroe impersonator; and Miss Stevenson who is convinced that
Ali is the reincarnation of her long dead Egyptian lover. All the while
Ali is in search of an elusive British visa and a fake bride - which
unexpectedly leads to his finding the love of his life. The film represents
Khaled's first British feature and has an impressive cast list, including
Juliette Lewis, Rupert Graves, and Anna Massy.
The winners receive
a specially designed Tyrone Crystal sculptured award, a certificate
and cash prize. The LIM Award represents one of the most reputable prizes
on the festival circuit.
Filmmakers interested
in entering the festival competition next year should get their entries
in for August 2001.
